The Museum has an exciting opportunity for experienced or emerging professionals to join the Curatorial team. The Museum aims to inspire, challenge, and empower people to find their voice and place in the world.

The Curatorial team researches and explores innovative ideas related to Australian history and collections.

Our curators work across a range of platforms and outputs (exhibitions, collections, digital, online, publications, presentations, seminars and events) to develop content and engage with audiences on topics that align with the Museum's strategic priorities.


The key duties of the position include:

APS6 Curator:


APS5 Curator:

Both positions will work, engage and consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and service providers.

It may also involve participating in the development and delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures content and programs.

As such you are required to have the capacity and willingness to further develop your skills and capacity to attain cultural competency, including:

- understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- willingness and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency.

Please note that this round will also seek to create a merit list for future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies.

Interviews are scheduled to take place in mid-March.


APS6 Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated highlevel conceptual knowledge as well as analytical and research skills in an area of Australian history and objectfocused collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in curatorship and audiencecentred museum practice.
  • Welldeveloped communication and liaison experience and skills, including demonstrated capacity to initiate and build collaborative relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, and represent the Museum in a range of formal and informal contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in and across small team environments, and to supervise and support staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively in the management of complex projects and complete tasks to a high quality, within the allocated time and budget.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

APS5 Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated conceptual knowledge and analytical and research skills in an area of Australian history and objectfocused collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in curatorship and audiencecentred museum practice, and in developing museum collections.
  • Sound communication and liaison experience and skills, including the capacity to build collaborative relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, and represent the museum in a range of formal and informal contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in, and across, small team environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage tasks and competing deadlines, and deliver high quality work within the allocated time and resources.
  • A good understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
